RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (sci-fi) James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto, Brian Cox, John Lithgow. A lab experiment gives intelligence to apes and sparks a war.

BOX-OFFICE REPORT

Cowboys and Aliens got smurfed at the weekend box office. In a big upset, The Smurfs tied with the big-budget sci-fi flick for number-one. Each earned an estimated $36.2 million, but the winner will be decided today when the final numbers come in.

• The weekend's other new release -- the comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love -- opened in fifth with $19.3 million.

• Captain America: The First Avenger dropped from first to third with $24.9 million. Cap has now banked $116.8 million.

• Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 went from second to fourth with $21.9 million. That raises the flick's total to $318.5 million.

BOX-OFFICE REPORT (audio)

Harry Potter was no match for Captain American at the weekend box office. The star-spangled superhero opened with a better-than-expected $65.8 million, bumping Harry to second.

• Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 earned $48.1 million -- a 72-percent drop from its record-breaking debut. In 10 days, the final Potter flick has made $274.2 million.

• The Justin Timberlake - Mila Kunis comedy Friends With Benefits opened in third with $18.5 million.

• Transformers: Dark of the Moon fell from second to fourth with $12 million. That raises its total to $325.8 million.

• Horrible Bosses went from third to fifth with $11.7 million.

FRIDAY, JULY 22ND

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (action) Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Samuel L. Jackson. An experimental program creates a super-soldier in the adaptation of the Marvel comic.

FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS (comedy) Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins. A headhunter tries to have a sex-only relationship with a potential recruit.

Blink 182 have announced that the name of their upcoming album will be "Neighborhoods".  The "reunion" album is their first of new material since 2003's "Blink-182".  Of the new album, Mark Hoppus says "So we're each like different neighborhoods in a city. Everybody in the world thinks of something unique unto themselves when they hear the word neighborhoods. To some it is a big city, others a small town, others suburbia, everything. The world is wide, exciting and very different. That's what Neighborhoods means to me."

"Neighborhoods" hits stores September 27th, but catch the tunes early when they hit First Niagara Pavilion with My Chemical Romance on September 17th!

Not surprisingly, the new (and final) chapter in the Harry Potter movie saga raked in big bucks over the weekend.  The Deathly Hallows pt. 2 pulled in $168.6 million, giving it the best box office weekend ever!

Transformers 3 did a respectable $21 million, bringing its total to $300 million.

Ke$ha wants the world to know that she is more than a dirty sleazeball.  She tells a Scottish magazine, "Yes, [my music] is masked by talking about drinking and partying like a wild woman, but underneath that it is really positive. People gravitate towards the party girl thing, but in my expression of myself, from the way I dress to how I speak and act, I am trying to encourage kids to be themselves, feel free to express themselves and have their eccentricities encouraged."

And also, to be dirty sleazeballs.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon continues its box office reign this week, adding another $47 million to its coffers, making it the highest grossing domestic movie of the year. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has earned more worldwide, but not here at home.

Jennifer Aniston ends her big-screen slump with Horrible Bosses, which snagged the number-two spot with $27 million in ticket sales.

Kevin James's The Zookeeper landed in third with $20 million.

Cars 2 3D dropped to fourth on sales of $16 million, bringing its total to just under $150 million.

And Bad Teacher rounds out the top five with $9.5 million.
